Prayer
The title for this piece went through a couple of iterations before landing on “Prayer”. There was an operatic “Haaa” for a while, but let’s be serious! I like the fact that “prayer” can be both ‘a prayer’ that one makes & also ‘a prayer’ as in the person or tree who makes the prayer. And this image is very much about a “prayer” in both senses.

The devil’s in the details
I do complain — about things. And someday, like a lot of other people, I may end up petrified and looking like I’m still complaining. The devil’s in the details, as they say….

Big Brother
Apparently, it was this particular AI-generated ad image — based on the prompt: “my painting in a gallery surrounded by clones of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson” — that got my ad campaign rejected by Meta’s Big Brother AI. There’s no irony here.

“An American Election”
So I decided to start an online ad campaign with this piece, “An American Election” & ran into a MAJOR SNAG with the project outright rejected + a full refund — based mainly on the title; they actually asked me to change the title!!! I refused.
It’s hard to believe that we are funding a genocide while a bunch of humans decide to forestall the advertisement of an artwork based on the “likelihood” that AI will be offended by its “political content”. We are long past 1984 now.

Local Yokels
At this point, I’ve been living where I am long enough to be considered a local yokel — and that’s saying a lot because I’ve lived on a few different continents. Islands, continents, what have you…. But I really do think that when you happen to live in a tourist-dense area and you’re not just passing through, you’re more likely to become a local yokel!

Selling art CAN be fun!
People complain about “selling” art maybe because it comes too close to “selling out” — I’m not so sure. But primarily, it’s about connecting with the folks in your community — from art gallery to restaurant & coffee shop owners, and many others — and I’ve met some genuinely wonderful people along the way over the years….
And then there’s the work of online presentation — and that’s A LOT of work. Almost as much as creating the original work… and surprisingly just as gratifying because it often calls for the inner graphic designer. As they say: hard work never stops & neither should your dreams!

What is art?
A quick Google search for “Picasso, chauvinist” brings up this:
“Pablo Picasso was a creative genius, but he was also a severe male chauvinist. He famously stated that women were either "goddesses or doormats". His personal life was filled with cruelty, control, and the emotional or physical harm of his many partners and family members.”
You and I didn’t know him but who’s to gainsay the testimony of the MANY individuals who did? And yet, I appreciate many of the quotes attributed to him, like: “Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a hammer with which to shape it.” He’s hard to cancel!
